5 Business Lessons That Actually Held Up Over 15+ Years | Nicole S. Ingram

I've built a firm that generated $1.9 million in six months, and I've also had to rebuild when the market shifted. Here's what I know to be true about running a sustainable, soulful business: it's about relationships, adaptability, brand clarity, financial literacy, and protecting the person doing the work. These aren't theories. They're lessons from the field.

Running a business isn't just about selling a service, it's about building something that can outlast your best year and survive your hardest one. I've done both.

After more than 15 years leading Stacy Nicole Interiors and Stacy Nicole Home through economic shifts, cross-country relocations, industry pivots, and moments that would have broken a lesser foundation, here are the five truths I keep coming back to.

1. Build Relationships. Not Just Transactions.

Your network is not your contact list. It's the ecosystem of trust you've cultivated over years. In the interior design industry, the majority of our projects come from referrals and returning clients, not cold outreach. That's not an accident.

Nurture your relationships when there's nothing to sell. Send a note. Share something useful. Celebrate their wins. People do business with people they genuinely like and trust. Design an experience around that truth, and the pipeline takes care of itself.

2. Adapt When the Market Asks You To.

In 2022, my firm generated $1.9 million in six months. By 2023, economic conditions had shifted significantly. The firms that treated that shift as a signal rather than a setback, those are the ones still standing.

Adapting is not a concession. It's intelligence in action. Exploring e-commerce with Stacy Nicole Home, expanding into new client segments, restructuring service offerings, every pivot was a deliberate decision to evolve rather than resist. Pay attention to what the market is telling you. Then respond with intention.

3. Invest in Your Brand Like It's Your Most Important Asset. Because It Is.

Your brand is the story people tell about you when you're not in the room. And if you're not controlling that narrative, through your website, your social media, your client experience, your packaging, then someone or something else is.

Keep your digital presence updated, mobile-optimized, and honest about who you are and who you serve. Deliver a consistent brand experience across every single touchpoint. From the first DM to the final reveal.

4. Know Your Numbers.

A beautiful portfolio means nothing if the business behind it is bleeding. Know your revenue. Know your margins. Know your cash flow. Know what it costs to deliver your service and charge accordingly.

Invest in a bookkeeper or accounting software that removes the guesswork. Decisions made from data are fundamentally different from decisions made from feeling. Both matter. But you need both.

5. Protect the Person Running the Business.

Burnout is not a badge of honor. I know this firsthand, 2023 was a year I had to learn it at full volume. The boundaries, the delegation, the personal rituals that keep you grounded, those are not luxuries. They are infrastructure.

Make space for the things that fill you. Travel. Movement. Rest. Family. When you're depleted, the work shows it. When you're nourished, everything you touch reflects that too.

What All of This Points To

Success, sustained over time, is never just one thing. It's relationships layered on top of adaptability, grounded in a brand that means something and backed by numbers you actually understand, all running on a foundation of personal wellbeing.

That's the model. It's also the design philosophy I bring to every client project: function first, soul always, built to last.
