Your shoes tell the story. So does your car. And so does your home, if you've let it. Interior design style is deeply personal, and figuring out yours is one of the most clarifying things you can do before starting any project. Here's how I think about style, what the major design languages look like in real Charlotte homes, and why knowing your aesthetic saves you time, money, and regret.
They say you can tell a lot about a person from their home, their shoes, and their car. I've always found that fascinating — and mostly true.
My own home was traditionally structured on the outside. But inside? My design style is anything but traditional. Bold. Layered. Intentional. Island-warm with an urban edge. Caribbean roots showing up in unexpected textures and colors, grounded by the kind of functionality a working mother of four absolutely requires.
Your design style is a self-portrait. The question is whether it's honest.

Design style is the visual language your home speaks. It's the palette of choices — color, texture, scale, pattern, material — that, when composed together, create a feeling. Not just an aesthetic. A feeling.
Some of the most recognizable design languages:
Traditional — symmetry, dark woods, ornate detail, rich fabrics. Timeless but can feel static without the right personal touches.
Transitional — where traditional structure meets contemporary ease. The sweet spot for many Charlotte homeowners who want both elegance and livability.
Contemporary/Modern — clean lines, restrained palettes, architectural materials. Beautiful when it breathes, cold when it doesn't.
Eclectic — the art of mixing intentionally. Not chaos — curation. The best eclectic spaces have a clear point of view underneath all the variety.
Art Deco — geometric patterns, bold contrasts, glamour and drama. I love a client who isn't afraid of this one.
Caribbean-Inspired — vibrant warmth, natural textures, colors that carry you somewhere. This is the thread I weave into my work whether clients ask for it or not.
Start with feeling, not furniture. When you walk into a room and exhale — what does that room look like? What colors are on the walls? What does the light feel like? Is it quiet or lively?
Then look at what you wear, how you travel, what restaurants you gravitate toward. Your aesthetic already exists. Design makes it physical.
If you're still unsure, that's what I'm here for. In our residential interior design consultations, we spend time understanding who you actually are — not just what you've seen on Pinterest — before making a single recommendation.
I've seen my own style evolve through every decade of my life. What felt right at 30 looks nothing like what feels right at 50. That's not inconsistency. That's growth. Your home should grow with you — which is why the design choices we make together are rooted in you now, not in a trend that will age poorly.
