Green Chair Project 2021 - Auction and Designer Showcase

A retrospective on Stacy Nicole Interiors’ participation in the 2021 Green Chair Project Chairity Auction and Designer Showcase and the value of design-centered community partnerships.

In 2021, Stacy Nicole Interiors was invited to reimagine a donated chair for The Green Chair Project’s Chairity Auction and Designer Showcase. This retrospective preserves the design story and the community purpose behind the event; the original auction dates and registration information have expired.

Designing a Donated Chair With Purpose

A successful furniture transformation begins with more than new fabric. The designer evaluates the frame, proportions, construction, comfort, finish, potential repairs, and the story the finished piece should tell.

For Chairity 2021, the challenge was to recognize the value already present in a donated item and translate it into something distinctive enough to attract attention, encourage bidding, and support the organization’s mission.

Why Furniture Reuse Matters

Well-made furniture can often be repaired, refinished, or reupholstered rather than discarded. Reuse can preserve craftsmanship, reduce waste, and create a one-of-a-kind result that would be difficult to duplicate through mass retail.

The process may include:

  • Structural inspection and repair
  • Foam or cushion replacement
  • Fabric and trim specification
  • Wood refinishing or painting
  • Pattern placement and upholstery detailing
  • Professional photography and presentation

Design as a Fundraising Tool

Designer showcases can create value for nonprofits by turning a practical object into a visible story. The finished work gives supporters a tangible way to participate while bringing attention to the organization’s larger goals.

In this case, the creative work supported The Green Chair Project’s efforts to help Wake County families establish furnished homes.

What We Learned

The event reinforced several principles that remain central to Stacy Nicole Interiors:

  • Good design can reveal value others overlook.
  • Collaboration expands community impact.
  • Furniture should be evaluated for quality and potential before replacement.
  • Beauty and function can support a larger social purpose.
