Green Chair Project Chair-ity 2023 - Room Designer

A retrospective on Nicole S. Ingram’s participation in the 2023 Green Chair Project Chairity showcase and the design principles behind creating a meaningful, functional room for a community-centered event.

Chairity 2023 demonstrated how interior design can help a community organization tell its story, engage supporters, and show the practical impact of a furnished home.

This article has been updated as a retrospective. The September 2023 event dates and original calls to attend are no longer active.

The Purpose Behind the Showcase

The Green Chair Project supports Wake County families with essential furnishings and household items. Chairity brought design professionals and industry partners together to raise visibility and resources for that mission.

For designers, the assignment was not simply to make a room attractive. The work needed to show how thoughtful furniture placement, lighting, color, texture, art, and storage can create comfort and dignity.

Nicole S. Ingram’s Room-Design Perspective

Nicole approached the showcase with a function-first framework:

  • Establish a clear focal point.
  • Create circulation that feels natural.
  • Use appropriately scaled furniture.
  • Layer color and texture without overcrowding the room.
  • Combine donated, restored, and sourced pieces intentionally.
  • Make the room feel personal rather than staged for display only.

Why the Details Matter

A well-designed room supports everyday behavior. Seating encourages conversation. Correct lighting improves comfort and usability. Storage reduces visual stress. A stable bed and practical surfaces support routine. Art and meaningful accessories create identity.

These choices are relevant in every interior—from a showcase room to a family home, clinic, office, hospitality environment, or public-serving facility.

Design, Reuse, and Stewardship

Community design projects also demonstrate the potential of existing furniture. When frames are safe and sound, refinishing and reupholstery can extend useful life and produce a distinctive result. Responsible reuse should be guided by condition, sanitation, function, and cost—not nostalgia alone.
