Nicole S. Ingram, Charlotte-based interior designer and founder of Stacy Nicole Interiors, shares her honest skincare routine at 50 — what she actually uses, what she spends, and why great skin is as intentional as great design.
Let me be clear about something: I don't believe in minimizing skincare. I believe in intentional skincare. There's a difference.
Minimizing implies guilt — like investing in your skin is somehow excessive or vain. I don't carry that. I am a woman who has survived a lot, built a lot, and lost and rebuilt across multiple seasons of life. My skin tells that story. My skincare routine is how I take care of the person who survived all of it.
At 51, I've landed on a routine that works. Some of it is expensive. Some of it is not. All of it is intentional.
I believe the skin you have at 50 reflects decades of choices — sun protection, hydration, sleep, stress management, nutrition. I didn't always make the best choices in all of those categories. I've made up for some of it. I've accepted what I can't change. And I've focused my investment on the products that genuinely move the needle.
I also believe that no skincare routine compensates for a life not well-lived. Rest. Movement. Boundaries. Food that nourishes. Time spent laughing. These are the foundation. Products are the support structure.
Cleansing: Double cleanse — oil cleanser first, gentle foaming second. I've used everything from drugstore to Chanel in this category and the truth is: the method matters more than the brand at this step.
Treatment: Retinol (prescription strength, introduced slowly over years) and Vitamin C in the morning. These two are non-negotiable for me. The difference in my skin texture and tone since committing to both is not subtle.
Hydration: This is where I spend without apology. Chanel skincare has earned my loyalty — specifically the Sublimage line. Not because the bottle is beautiful (though it is). Because the results on my skin are consistent and visible.
SPF: Every single day. No exceptions. No negotiation. This is the single highest-return investment in skincare at any age.
Eye care: A dedicated eye cream, applied morning and night. The skin around the eyes ages differently and deserves different attention.
Lip care: $42 lip gloss when the mood strikes. Unrepentant.
Consistency beats any product. Whatever your routine is — do it, every day, without exception. The products compound over time the way investments do.
Price is not always quality but quality is rarely free. Know where to spend and where to save. SPF? drugstore does the job. Retinol? invest in formulation and delivery system. Moisturizer? depends on your skin and your skin alone — try before you commit.
Gray hair and good skin are not in opposition. I love my gray curls. I love my glowing skin. Both are a choice. Both are mine.
I design spaces the way I care for my skin: with intention, with investment in the right places, with consistency over time, and with a clear point of view about what I want the outcome to feel like. The spaces I build and the face I show up in are both reflections of who I am right now — not who I was, not who someone else thinks I should be.
See what that intentionality looks like in the spaces I build at the Stacy Nicole Interiors portfolio.
