The Window Treatment Guide Charlotte Homeowners Actually Need

Window treatments are the most underestimated element in a room. Charlotte interior designer Nicole S. Ingram explains custom drapery, blinds, and shades — and why this decision matters more than most people realize. Serving SouthPark, Myers Park, Ballantyne, and greater Charlotte, NC.

The Window Treatment Guide Charlotte Homeowners Actually Need

I have a rule in design: never skip the windows.

I've walked into rooms with beautiful furniture, perfect paint, and thoughtful accessories — and they still felt unfinished. Every single time, the culprit was the same: bare windows, or treatments that were cheap, wrong-sized, or stylistically adrift from everything else in the room.

Window treatments are the frame of the painting. The wrong one ruins the whole composition.

The Full Spectrum: What Your Options Actually Are

Drapery / Curtain Panels — The most impactful option. Floor-to-ceiling panels in the right fabric and color transform a room's perceived height, warmth, and sophistication. Custom drapery is always preferable to off-the-shelf because dimensions matter enormously.

Roman Shades — Clean, tailored, excellent in kitchens and bathrooms. Soft Roman shades have more warmth; flat Romans read more contemporary.

Roller Shades — Modern, minimalist, often motorized. Great as a layer under drapery or solo in contemporary spaces.

Cellular/Honeycomb Shades — Excellent insulation, clean look. A practical choice where energy efficiency matters.

Woven Wood / Bamboo Shades — Natural texture, warmth, and that island-adjacent quality I genuinely love. Works beautifully in Charlotte homes with warm palettes.

Plantation Shutters — A Charlotte classic for good reason: classic architecture, light control, and longevity. They add perceived value to a home.

Motorized Systems — Across all of the above, motorization is increasingly standard in luxury installations and genuinely changes how you use and experience your space.

What Works Where

Living rooms: Layered treatments — a functional shade underneath and drapery panels on either side — create fullness, warmth, and control. Mount high (within 4–6 inches of the ceiling) and wide (6–12 inches beyond the window frame on each side). Always.

Primary bedrooms: Blackout functionality with beautiful aesthetics. Custom lined drapery with a blackout layer, or motorized blackout roller shades hidden behind decorative panels.

Kitchens: Functional over decorative here. Roman shades or simple café curtains depending on your privacy needs and ceiling height.

Home offices: Light-diffusing roller shades are the workhorse choice — reduces screen glare while keeping the room bright.

Why Custom Almost Always Wins

Off-the-shelf treatments are designed for the most common window sizes. Your windows are not the most common window sizes. The difference between a panel that's 2 inches too short and one that grazes the floor correctly is the difference between a room that feels designed and one that feels assembled.

Custom also means the right fabric weight, the right lining, the right hardware — all coordinated to the room rather than picked in isolation.
